Let us dive into more information about garnet!
History of Garnet
The word “garnet” originates from medieval Latin granatus, which means pomegranate, for its red colour. Since the Bronze Age, garnets have been used as abrasives and gemstones. The pharaohs in ancient Egypt adorned necklaces studded with red garnets. Even in the Middle Ages, the noble & royal classes preferred red garnets.
During the Victorian times, Bohemia was the primary source of red garnets. However, in contemporary times, Africa is the biggest supplier of garnets in the world. Moreover, it is also found in Brazil, Myanmar, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and other countries around the world.
Characteristics of Garnet
Garnet is formed of several minerals, including five of these gemstones- almandine, andradite, pyrope, grossular, and spessartine. According to Indian astrology, this January birthstone is helpful in eliminating negative feelings by fostering mental clarity, greater self-confidence, creative thinking, and peace of mind. Since ancient and medieval times, garnet has been believed to be a great remedy for inflammatory diseases and soothes the heart. Garnet ranges between 6.5 and 7.5 on Moh’s scale of hardness. While most garnets are not treated, some garnets are fracture-filled.
Caring & Cleaning of Garnet
This January birthstone is more prone to damage as compared to other gemstones like sapphires, diamonds, and rubies. Not all garnets are recommended to be worn daily, however, they make ideal pendants, earrings, and brooches. It must also be considered that garnet must not be rubbed against other harder gems like rubies, diamonds, and sapphires, as they may scratch your garnet. In turn, garnet can scratch other softer gems like pearls and opals. Treated garnets require special care. To clean your garnet, use warm soapy water and a soft brush. While steam cleaners are not recommended to clean garnets, ultrasonic cleaners are safe unless they are fractured or fracture-filled garnets.
