- Your career in the jewelry industry is truly inspiring. Could you share some key moments or experiences that shaped your journey and led you to become a global leader in this field?
Maha Al Sibai: One of the most life-changing moments for me was in 2001, when I won 1st place in the Jewelry Design Award, hosted by the World Gold Council. Standing on that stage, receiving the trophy, I realized this wasn’t just an award, it was a defining moment. It felt like my path in life was shifting, guiding me deeper into the world of jewelry. From that point on, I knew I was on a journey that would lead to something much bigger than myself.
- Your brand is known for combining innovation with luxury. How did you develop a design philosophy that blends traditional craftsmanship with modern trends?
Maha Al Sibai: At heart, I’ve always been an artist. For me, art is a universal language, a way to express my thoughts, emotions, and even my moods. Jewelry is just one part of that language. It allows me to tell a story or send a message through each piece I create. I think that’s what sets my designs apart, that they’re not just beautiful objects, they carry meaning. By combining traditional craftsmanship with a modern twist, I’m able to keep that message relevant while staying true to the art form.
- Dubai is a major hub for diamonds and jewelry. In your opinion, what factors have contributed to the city’s success as a global center for luxury jewelry?
Maha Al Sibai: Dubai and luxury are almost synonymous. Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum says, “Dubai is a brand in itself,” and that really sums it up. The city holds such high standards in everything it does, from architecture to lifestyle, and that naturally extends to the jewelry industry. With its blend of tradition, innovation, and forward-thinking infrastructure, Dubai has become a magnet for both jewelers and collectors from around the world. It’s a city where excellence is expected, and that has been a key factor in its success.
- The jewelry industry has faced many challenges recently, including the pandemic and global conflicts. How has the Dubai jewelry sector adapted to these changes, and what strategies have worked best for maintaining growth?
Maha Al Sibai: The pandemic hit everyone hard, especially luxury sectors like jewelry. Unlike necessities such as food or medicine, jewelry isn’t something people need to survive. I was reminded of the struggles the diamond industry faced after World War II; demand plummeted, and jewelers had to rethink their strategies. Similarly, we had to adapt. People’s priorities changed, and we responded by shifting towards more personalized experiences and embracing digital platforms to meet those new needs. It’s about staying flexible and understanding how to connect with clients in meaningful ways.
- The partnership between the Dubai Designer Group and the International Institute of Gemology (IIG) is a significant step. What inspired you to collaborate with IIG, and how do you think this partnership will impact the future of jewelry design and education?
Maha Al Sibai: For us, one of our main goals has always been to protect the integrity of jewelry design, both for the designers themselves and the consumers. That means putting education at the forefront. Designers need to truly understand the materials they’re working with, and that authenticity will always reflect in the final piece. IIG has an incredible track record when it comes to educating professionals in the industry. Partnering with them allows us to share that knowledge with our members and create an even stronger connection between the UAE and India. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
- IIG is known for its excellence in jewelry education. How do the missions of the Dubai Designer Group and IIG align, and what goals do you hope to achieve together through this collaboration?
Maha Al Sibai: When we partner with anyone, we look for four key things: authenticity, credibility, flexibility, and a wide range of expertise. IIG checks all those boxes. They’ve been in the industry for a long time, and their courses are top-notch. What’s been great is how they’ve worked with us to tailor these courses to our member’s’ specific needs, including timing and location. Together, we’re building a solid educational plan that will empower our designers to grow in the industry.
- This collaboration brings together different cultural and design perspectives. What excites you the most about this partnership, and how do you see it shaping the next generation of jewelry designers?
Maha Al Sibai: What excites me the most is the cultural exchange. As an artist, it’s so important to be exposed to different cultures. It really expands your perspective. India, for example, has such a rich tradition of jewelry-making, and each region has its own unique methods and styles. I don’t think anyone can call themselves an expert in jewelry design without understanding India’s role in the craft. IIG is playing a key role in helping us share this knowledge and push the boundaries of what’s possible in design.
- As a leader in the industry, what role do you see Dubai playing in the future of global jewelry design and trade?
Maha Al Sibai: Dubai has always been a key player in the gold and jewelry trade, especially in the Middle East. The government here is very proactive in identifying new opportunities. When they saw a growing interest in the jewelry design sector, they created the Dubai Business Group for Gold and Jewelry Designers. Our role within that group is to act as a voice for designers, helping them figure out the business side of things while also making sure they have the resources to succeed. It’s all about creating a supportive ecosystem where both the government and designers can work together to keep the industry thriving.
- Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the luxury market. How can designers incorporate sustainable practices into their design and production processes?
Maha Al Sibai: We all have a responsibility to take care of the planet, and the jewelry industry is no exception. We’ve been encouraging our designers to think about sustainability not just in terms of materials, but also in the way they approach their entire creative process. Whether it’s using eco-friendly materials or adopting greener production methods, there are many ways to incorporate sustainability into their designs. Part of our job is to raise awareness and help them see the impact they can have by making more conscious choices.
- Looking to the future, what are your hopes for the Dubai Designer Group and the wider jewelry industry? What legacy do you want to leave for future designers and entrepreneurs?
Maha Al Sibai: For me, it’s all about the message behind the design. I want to make sure that during my time as a leader, my team and I are giving designers a platform to share their work and their stories with the world. But before they do that, we need to equip them with the right tools; like a solid education in gemology, so they can create pieces that are both beautiful and credible. Ultimately, I hope the legacy we leave is one where jewelry is seen as more than just luxury, but as a form of art that tells a story, reflects a moment in time, and connects with people on a deeper level.
