The International Institute of Gemology (IIG) recently organized an immersive two-day industrial visit to Surat; India’s diamond capital for its students. This initiative wasn’t just an educational tour; it was a carefully curated journey designed to bridge the critical gap between academic learning and real-world application.
At IIG, we believe that theoretical learning must be complemented by real-world application to achieve true industry readiness. The transformation happens when students step into the heart of the industry, where diamonds are sorted, polished, designed, and set into fine jewellery. These first-hand encounters with the industry’s working ecosystem play a pivotal role in developing the next generation of skilled professionals.

The Surat visit offered students a 360° view of the diamond and jewellery value chain. From observing sustainable practices at Hare Krishna Exports, including their solar-powered infrastructure and organic meal service, to witnessing a full-scale jewellery production unit at HK Jewels, every experience was designed to build perspective.
A highlight of the visit was a motivating interaction with Mr. Pintu Bhai Dholakia, whose words left an indelible impact on the students. His humility, experience, and wisdom helped students understand the values that truly define leadership in this trade.
Day two began with an in-depth walkthrough of the Accur8 Diamond Factory, led by Mr. Aagam Bhai Sanghvi, who gave students a rare peek into the world of ultra-luxury and fancy colour diamonds, auctions, and collector-grade pieces. The trip concluded with a visit to Green Lab Diamonds, where students witnessed the creation of lab-grown diamonds and met the artisan behind the iconic 7.50 ct diamond gifted by PM Modi to US President Joe Biden.
“We believe in serving a wholesome, balanced learning meal,” said Mr. Rahul Desai, MD & CEO of IIG. “Our students receive not just theoretical and practical education, but also a rich mix of industry exposure, guest lectures from domain experts, access to our extensive alumni network, one-on-one mentorship, placement support, and continued guidance even after they graduate. Education shouldn’t end at the classroom door.”
These industry visits go far beyond textbooks and tools, they allow students to develop emotional intelligence, business acumen, professional curiosity, and industry etiquette. The Surat visit exemplifies IIG’s mission to deliver immersive and transformative experiences that prepare students to thrive in the ever-evolving gem and jewellery industry.
