Have you ever wondered about the journey a rough diamond takes to become a dazzling, polished gemstone? We at IIG, certainly did, and We recently had the privilege of embarking on an illuminating journey into the heart of the diamond industry, Surat – the Diamond City with a visit to Shree Ramkrishna Exports (SRK) and Golden Carat, one of the largest and most renowned natural diamond crafting companies in the world. It was an experience that left us in awe of the craftsmanship, precision, and sheer beauty that goes into every diamond they craft.
Diamonds – the very word conjures images of breathtaking beauty and timeless elegance. These precious gems, shrouded in mystique, have fascinated humankind for centuries. At the International Institute of Gemology (IIG), we believe in providing our students with firsthand experiences that nurture their passion for gemstones and equip them with practical knowledge. Our recent industrial visit to Shree Ramkrishna Exports (SRK) Diamond Crafting Facility was a testament to this commitment.
Gathering of Enthusiasts:
On a bright morning, a group of 25 budding gem enthusiasts and jewellery designers of International Institute of Gemology (IIG) from various corners of India and the UAE assembled, their faces lit with excitement and curiosity. Our destination? SRK, a world-renowned name in the diamond industry. As we arrived at SRK Diamond Crafting Facility, the students and faculty were warmly welcomed by the SRK team. The air was filled with a blend of enthusiasm and anticipation – a sense that we were about to embark on an extraordinary journey into the heart of the diamond world. Before entering the factory, we went through stringent security checks. It was a powerful reminder of the immense value and importance of the natural diamonds being processed within those walls.
Journey Through Diamond Craftsmanship:
Our factory tour was a mesmerizing exploration of the diamond crafting process, encompassing every facet of this mesmerizing journey:
- Rough Diamond Inspection: We began by witnessing experts carefully inspecting rough diamonds, assessing their potential and unique characteristics.
- Diamond Cutting and Shaping: The heart of the factory was where our students observed skilled artisans at work, using precision instruments and latest machineries to transform rough diamonds into perfectly cut and shaped gems.
- Diamond Polishing: The group was in awe as they watched the transformation of these stones into sparkling jewels, an intricate process that maximizes their brilliance.
- Sorting and Grading: Our students learned the art of diamond grading, seeing firsthand how diamonds are sorted based on quality, color, and clarity.
- Quality Control: The stringent quality control measures employed by SRK left an indelible impression on all of us, underscoring their unwavering commitment to excellence.
Ethical and Environmental Responsibility:
One of the highlights of our visit was learning about SRK’s commitment to ethical sourcing and environmental sustainability. Understanding that these breathtaking gems were created with such dedication to both people and the planet left a deep impression on our young gemologists.
SRK shines as an industry pacesetter, holding the highest number of ISO certifications and the title of the most compliant company in both the diamond sector and Surat. Their operational foundation is firmly rooted in sustainability principles, with ‘SRK Empire’ and ‘SRK House’ proudly bearing USGBC-LEED Platinum green building certifications, both the diamond crafting facilities will be Net Zero by 2024. This will be 6 years earlier than India’s commitment to be net zero by 2030. SRK directly sources rough diamonds from industry giants like De Beers, Arctic Canadian Diamond Company Ltd., and Rio Tinto, upholding ethical standards. As active members of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), SRK is committed to ethical and environmentally responsible practices, setting the standard for brilliance with a conscience.
A Dialogue of Knowledge:
Throughout the tour, our knowledgeable guide encouraged questions and provided detailed answers. This open dialogue enriched our understanding of the diamond industry, bridging the gap between theory and practice. Our journey culminated in a visit to SRK’s Orientation gallery, where the students had the privilege of admiring a stunning array of diamonds and diamond jewellery. It was a reminder that behind every exquisite piece of jewellery lies a story of dedication, precision, and timeless beauty.
