The education scenario of the Gems and Jewellery Industry in India.

India has been a hub for the finest gems, diamonds and jewellery since ancient times. We are a country proud of the fact that a diamond-like Kohinoor came out of the Golconda mines. The Gems and Jewellery trade traditionally was passed down from one generation to another for many generations. The trade secrets were kept within the family and each new generation was
taught this art. With the modernization wave, the family structure broke down and these generational businesses
dissolved paving way for a new generation of business establishments.

Most part of the Gems and Jewellery sector is unorganised with very few institutions to teach. The education sector of the Gems and Jewellery trade is haphazardly formed.

Very few institutes that have come up with the claim that anyone can become a designer, grader etc. and start their own business and career. The students of the current generation are looking for short–cut and crash courses either online or offline. These courses give a very partial view of the industry mechanism.

A whole troupe of jewellery designers have come up claiming to have the best knowledge to teach and educate students in this field.

The Indian government has established councils like GJSCI, GJEPC and IBJA to name a few to channel the skill set in the Gems and Jewellery Industry. Every now and then, they come up with promotional schemes to empower the students with the correct education and guidance.

Students planning to become an entrepreneur or start their career in the Gems and Jewellery Industry need to look into many points and then take a leap in it.

Few points to ponder:
1) Instead of looking at crash courses go in for courses that give you the edge with advanced knowledge.
2) Essential to do a market survey of the current scenario.
3) Look into the profile and portfolio of your educators
4) Research on the institutes that you choose.
5) Are they giving placements after the course?
6) Survey the quality of designs in India instead of just salary.
7) Learn the terminology of the trade.
8) Get a certificate from a recognised institute for a better career path.

The Gems and Jewellery Industry has numerous opportunities and career paths within the industry. Focus on what you want to learn and become successful. Keep in mind that this industry is not a job or career path but a way of life. You need to be dedicated like a musician to establish yourself in this industry. The more you learn the better you will become in this industry. The 1 st five years of your career should be utilised on learning, winning hearts and awards, and then the title, money and accolades will follow.

The International Institute of Gemology is a premier institute since 1965 providing accurate knowledge and education. The certificates are globally recognised. The institute has trained and skilled more than 1,00,000 professionals in the Gems and Jewellery industry keeping in mind the changing times over the decades.
