Patriotism, Policy & The Psychology of Gold – What the Industry Is Missing in This Debate

India’s need to protect foreign exchange reserves is real.

With global uncertainty rising and energy supply chains under pressure, economic discipline is no longer optional. Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is right to encourage more responsible consumption and reduce avoidable import dependency.

But this also raises a larger strategic question:

Should India continue viewing gold only as an imported commodity?

Or should it start treating the Gems & Jewellery sector as a national value-creation industry?

Because the economic story of this sector is far bigger than consumption.

India imports gold.

But India also transforms it.

Through design.

Through craftsmanship.

Through manufacturing.

Through retail.

Through exports.

Through millions of livelihoods built around one of the country’s oldest economic ecosystems.

The Gems & Jewellery industry supports an enormous network of karigars, MSMEs, designers, traders, retailers, exporters, and skilled workers whose contribution extends far beyond storefront sales.

And the market reaction to recent comments showed exactly how interconnected this industry has become with organised business confidence and investor sentiment.

The real question, therefore, is not whether India should reduce dependency.

It absolutely should.

The question is whether the country can simultaneously:

  • Reduce raw import pressure
  • Increase recycling and monetisation
  • Expand value-added exports
  • Strengthen domestic manufacturing
  • Build global demand for “Designed & Made in India” jewellery

That is where the real opportunity lies.

Industries become strategic not merely because they consume resources, but because they create ecosystems, employment, intellectual property, exports, and long-term economic multipliers.

India should absolutely aim for economic prudence. But prudence should not weaken confidence in one of the country’s most employment-intensive and globally scalable creative industries.

The future of India’s Gems & Jewellery sector will not be decided by how much gold the country imports. It will be decided by how intelligently India converts that gold into economic value for the world.
